At the beginning of 1992, the condition of Japanese animation was rather critical. MACROSS II had proved to be a loser, GUNDAM F91 had bombed and there were no interesting TV series. Things were bad. But suddenly, a ray of hope appeared: Giant Robo. Directed by Yasuhiro Imagawa, it was inspired by Mitsuteru Yokoyama’s manga published at the beginning of the 1960’s, which also spawned a live action in 1967. The story of the OVA is rather different from the live action show. It recounts the adventures of the “Experts of Justice”, a team of secret agents with special powers, and their fight against “Big Fire”, an organization of criminals (with special powers too, naturally) who wanted to dominate the world. Giant Robo is also an ecological tale; Humanity now uses the Shizuma Drive, a pollution-free and recyclable form of energy (cold fusion? It seems to be biological in some of its constituents, but the mystery remains). However, it seems that this form of energy may also be Humanity’s demise. Big Fire now attempts to take control of all the Shizuma Drives on the planet. The popularity of the Giant Robo OVAs has grown steadily with each volume (the fifth of which is expected to be released in September 1994), and that is the reason behind the Ginrei OVA.

One of the most endearing characters of Giant Robo is Ginrei, one of the Experts of Justice and principal female character. Beautiful, courageous and very determined — not to mention busty and long-legged, although we all know this has nothing to do with her popularity — Ginrei has proven to be so popular in the hearts (?) of (male) otaku that it was decided she would star in an OVA of her own.

The story begins with Ginrei in her shower and a call from Daisaku, telling her that she is needed at the headquarters. Then, we switch to Lord Alberto’s shower, which is also interrupted for the same reason. At Big Fire’s headquarters, Lord Alberto is given a briefing on Ginrei (which is made of parts from Giant Robo and lots of stills) and apprised of her achievements. He is then introduced to Ginrei’s perfect (but evil) double. Big Fire’s plan seems to consist of replacing Ginrei with her double inside the Experts of Justice’s structure. However, for their plan to work, they need a perfect double, and this is why Ginrei later discovers that one of her dresses is missing. Since the dress seems to be of great importance to her, she decides to retrieve it and gets captured. Of course, it is not every day that Big Fire gets to interrogate one of the top Experts of Justice and they relish in doing so. Lord Alberto and the evil Ginrei enjoy themselves quite a bit — until Giant Robo arrives, that is. Then, Ginrei knocks the evil Ginrei down and the lower part of Ginrei’s dress is ripped off in the process. Since she she has her back to us, we can’t see what astonishes Lord Alberto and the evil Ginrei so much, but when Ginrei rips one of her breasts off and reveals a (active) grenade, it becomes obvious that this cannot be Ginrei. It’s Kenji Murasame. Daisaku is, of course, astonished by such a turn of events, and the bad guys are beyond astonishment (which is fairly understandable). After reducing the Big Fire base to rubble, Giant Robo, Daisaku and Murasame make their way back to the Expert of Justice’s headquarters in Beijing, China.

So that is it. The famous Ginrei OVA that had everybody talking for months. Not very impressive. The whole thing lasts less than 30 minutes, and much less than half is new animation (about 10 minutes). A good portion of the animation in this OVA is directly taken from the Giant Robo OVAs and the rest are still shots. It would not have been so bad if the new animation would have been of Giant Robo caliber, but it just is not the case. We were also quite sorry to discover that the story is ridiculous and is, in fact, only a plot destined to show Ginrei naked. We felt cheated, since all the articles in Newtype and Anime V made a big fuss of it, leaving us, Giant Robo fans, dead in the water. The OVA is cute enough and fairly well done — and fairly funny — but it just was not what we were waiting for. The idea of letting us hear Ginrei’s answering machine was cute, though. This OVA is a big letdown and if anyone plans on buying it, then perhaps he should revise his buying priorities. There are many anime worth buying before this one. Too bad.

Ginrei

One of the IPO’s best agents, Ginrei is also the daughter of professor Franken von Fogler and Genya’s sister. At 18,. she has completed many missions and is one of the operatives directly in charge of the Shizuma Drive Incidents operations. This involvement is twofold: first, she wants to rid the world of the evil of Big Fire and its thread; second, she wants to make sure that whatever happens, the tragedy of Bashydalle will never be repeated. She also feels responsible for that incident, as it was her father who provoked it. She likes Daisaku a lot and treats him like a little brother, to Tetsugyu’s despair. The attitude of both the big ox and Taiso displease her, but she is ready to concede that they are good at what they do. Based in Beijing, where the IPO has one of its main branches, Ginrei is known as an ace marksman and uses handguns with the practiced efficiency of a professional. Big Fire, who sees her as one of their principal nuisances to their plans, does not seem to know that she and “Iron Mask” (whom we see at the beginning of Episode One) are the same person, giving her a great flexibility in her missions. Beautiful and very intelligent, she loves to tease men, especially the young and impressionable ones. Ginrei’s special power is teleportation, but she uses it only in the most extreme cases; it has adverse effects on her health and can kill her if overused.
